What Your Smartphone Says About You

It’s time to play the “What Your Phone Says About You” game one more time. Last year, with the help of some research, I put together a list of characteristics that describe the type of person who would typically carry a certain fashion phone, along with the celebrities who have them just for fun. For example, those who had a RAZR were typically seen as fashion conscious, individualistic, and fun seekers. Celebrities like Paris Hilton, Rachael Bilson, and Micha Barton were all sporting one at the time, which seemed to reinforce the stereotype.

Recently, I came across a similar report on MSNBC, except this one focused on the latest smartphones a little bit more. The ones mentioned here, and probably the most popular, were the Blackberry, the Treo, Sidekick and the iPhone. MSNBC contacted representatives from each company and other experts to give their opinion on the type of user they think each product attracts, and here’s what they had to say:

Blackberry

Who uses it: A favorite among financial professionals, event planners, government and law enforcement, salespeople and journalists, but newer models are much more appealing to a wider spectrum of people, including soccer moms, says Mark Guibert, RIM’s vice president of corporate marketing.

What it says about you: The article doesn’t really say, but words like addiction, withdrawl, and constantly connected were thrown around, which lead us to believe Blackberry users are people who like to be in constant contact with their office. Guibert adds that, “BlackBerry users tend to quickly become addicts, and a range of named afflictions have followed, from ‘BlackBerry thumb’ (a repetitive stress problem) to ‘phantom BlackBerry syndrome,’ ” when a user isn’t carrying the device, but feels the hip buzz anyway.”

1.1 Billion Mobiles Sold Around the World in 2007

Is it possible to live on Planet Earth without a cell phone? The
answer would seem to be no, at least according to the cell-phone
industry and its analysts.

More than 1.1 billion mobile phones were sold around the world last
year, and developing countries in Africa and elsewhere should maintain
the momentum in 2008, according to a study released Thursday.

Samsung i900 Smartphone

Samsung is apparently working on a new high-end smartphone behind the scenes. The image of Samsung SGH-i900 was so watermarked, that you could barely seen the phone on it, and the user interface on the picture looked nothing like the proper Windows Mobile smartphone should have.

MobiFrance reports that Samsung i900 Windows Mobile phone is indeed in the works.

Motorola’s Foldable/Rollable Phone

A newly patent application from Motorola has revealed a design for a
mobile that features a foldable / roll-upable display and keypad. this
concept is nothing new. The are quite a few of these gadgets on the
market or at least in late prototype stage but all of them have one
problem, flexible/rollable is by definition not rigid. And using the
phone with a keypad or display flapping in the wind, is not such a
good idea.

EU Tells Mobile Companies to Cut Text Charges

Many of citizens in the European Union want the EU to take action to cut the charges telecom companies impose on travelers using mobile phones outside their home country.

Even before laws came into force, the threat of legally-binding limits on the cost of calls made or received on a mobile while abroad caused a 10 per cent reduction in prices.

EU Telecoms Commissioner Viviane Reding said overall price reductions averaged 60% compared with the prices phone operators could charge before the rules came into force, when the average cost of a call home was about one euro and 10 cents (76p). Before the EU rules some consumers were paying as much as 12 euros - £8.30 - for a four-minute roaming call when abroad.

Using a mobile phone before going to bed is bad for your health

Radiation from mobile phones delays and reduces sleep, and causes headaches and confusion, according to a new study.

Using the handsets before bed causes people to take longer to reach the deeper stages of sleep and to spend less time in them, interfering with the body’s ability to repair damage suffered during the day.

The findings are especially alarming for children and teenagers, whom usually chat to friends on their mobiles before sleep. They can’t get enough sleep and this can result in attention disorders and poor academic performance.

iPhone 1.1.3 software/firmware

There are two significant improvements in the iPhone 1.1.3 software/firmware update which
Apple folks did not think were significant enough to inform us.

The first is an increase to the amount of SMS messages the iPhone can store. The storage limit for SMS has been increased from 1,000 to around 75,000.
