“Otello”, smart move and cool idea that let you flexible and generic searching. It can potentially let you find things that are hard to verbalize into a query. Now that image recognition is making some movements in the way of application, we can expect to see more functionality introduced into mobile devices.
Vodafone has demonstrated a new trial service called “Otello”, which is basically a mobile search engine that uses images, rather than words at the CeBIT show in Germany.
In other words, handset owners just snap a picture of anything — from a historical building to a CD cover — and Otello then “returns information relevant to the picture to the mobile phone.” Reportedly, Vodafone is expected to conduct a trial with German paper Bild in which readers can “find out more about specially-marked articles by photographing them with their mobile’s camera and sending the image to [the aforementioned paper].”
